Simon Cairns Biography
Born and raised in the North-East of England, Simon has been involved in the arts from an early age, although the decision to pursue a career in the arts didn’t happen until 2004. Coming from a background of natural performers it seemed logical that he would end up doing it professionally.
Although acting is his first love, Simon has been known to explore other avenues. Between 2004 and 2005, Simon fronted the rock band MHQ. Although the band was quite prolific, things didn't go according to plan as he discovered when the band broke up due to artistic differences in the summer of 2005. He was presented with his share of the band’s bank account (£13.60) and a pat on the back. Still involved with music, Simon compered the open mic night 'Live Jive and Electric Slide at Enigma in Newcastle. Having found his feet he organised a charity event for Comic Relief called “The Big Laugh” in early 2006. At the event were jugglers, clowns, magicians, stilt walkers and two local named acts; Verity Burton and the Suggestibles. The night was a success and raised well over £600 for comic relief. 2006 also saw Simon tackle serious roles such as Oberon in A Midsummer Nights Dream and the Officer in Harold Pinter’s Mountain Language. 2006 saw him in his first film role; playing Jack in the horror ‘Eyes of Ella’ by Amy De Oliveira. This was his 3rd major role that year and the third to cast him as a villain.
2007 came and with it more experiences and chances for growth. He did two full productions this year. The First, ‘A Better Future’, was directed by John B. Kirtley. It was a devised show aimed at showcasing every student in the year. In this performance, Simon played Satan; a likely occurrence, given his track record of playing high status characters and ‘bad guys’. The second, ‘A Christmas Carol’, was Directed by Erica Whyman for Northern Stage. Here he played "Wally, a lighthouse keeper" and understudied for the roles of Fred, Young Scrooge and Peter Cratchitt. From late October until early January Simon devoted so much energy to this show that by the time the end rolled round, he was quite relieved not to be celebrating Christmas any longer!
Fresh from completling a BA in Contemporary Acting, Simon has branched out into the world of cabaret and burlesque where he can often be seen performing as the indomitable 'Reverend Vincent Feelgood'. Truly an artist of many skills, the future looks bright for this emerging new talent. Watch this space!
